ARCHITECTURE
The two buildings of the SHIROIYA HOTEL were designed to blend old and new, connecting Maebashi's past as an industrial powerhouse of silk production, with its ongoing revitalization. What started as a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) over 300 years ago, grew into a hotel in the 1970s, and has now been completely reshaped and reimagined. World-renowned architect Sou Fujimoto gutted the main building to form a light-filled atrium, bringing new energy to the structure. He also created the Green Tower: a "hill" that appears to grow out of the landscape, reflecting the ancient topography of the area. The reborn hotel is a masterpiece of minimalist luxury that serves as a cultural axis for the city of Maebashi.
