Kusatsu Onsen Naraya

Founded in 1877, Naraya is a long-established ryokan located just steps from the Yubatake—the heart of Kusatsu Onsen—and is known for its 100% free-flowing natural hot spring baths.
Originally opened as an inn for travelers, Naraya grew alongside Kusatsu’s reputation as a therapeutic hot spring destination, welcoming guests in search of rest and restoration. During wartime, it also served as a refuge for evacuated schoolchildren, continuing to adapt with the times.

In the postwar years, as Kusatsu evolved into a popular travel destination, Naraya remained committed to its traditions while carefully preserving and managing its renowned hot spring waters. Today, it is especially favored by discerning travelers seeking a refined, unhurried stay—one that balances heritage and hospitality with contemporary comfort.

Hot Springs
Naraya draws its waters from the Shirahata source, located on the southwest side of the Yubatake just outside the ryokan. This historic spring is said to have been discovered and first used for bathing by Minamoto no Yoritomo in 1193, making it one of the most storied sources in Kusatsu.

Guest Room
Sen’yutei “Iwakagami”
A spacious maisonette-style room with a semi-open-air bath overlooking the Yubatake.
The 90 sqm layout is designed as a single, open-plan space, where living, dining, bedroom, and tatami areas flow seamlessly together, creating a relaxed and luxurious atmosphere. On the lower level, a private semi-open-air bath—fed by the Shirahata spring—offers views out toward the Yubatake.

Dining
After a relaxing soak in Kusatsu’s hot springs, enjoy a beautifully presented meal featuring seasonal ingredients and regional specialties from Gunma. Menus showcase local produce and change throughout the year to express the seasons.
